UNILOCK Pro Series
At GP Industries we have proven what it takes to produce a High
Strength Dumbbell that can withstand the most severe abuse in Today's
punishing Commercial Fitness and Training environments. The Dumbbell
is clearly the most single problematic item in the free weight category
especially in sizes above 50 pounds.
First it needs to be Gravity Molded and bonded to the metal core.
Gravity Molding is similar to mixing Cement with Part A and Part
B using a high grade of U.S, German or Japanese Urethane and chemically
bonded to the inner metal core during the molding process. In this
process of pouring the Urethane there are NO seams that can separate
because it is in a liquid form that cures. Special attention is paid
to high impact areas such as the outer edges and corners where it
is necessary to beef up the coating thickness.
The bonding step is a critical component although many companies
avoid it to save costs. Prior to molding, the inner steel core is
treated with a bonding agent then heated to certain temperatures
causing a chemical reaction during the molding process creating an
adhesive effect. If the coating is Not bonded to the core the outer
layer upon impact will shift on the core causing weak points and
eventual splitting. When the process is done correctly there is no
way to remove the coating other than by high temperature incineration.
With a Non Bonded product once the coating is damaged it can be peeled
off similar to removing a rubber glove. By using top grade Urethane
formulas you get maximum impact strength and tear resistance. GP
Industries has confirmed this based on testing as crude as throwing
80 pound Dumbbells off of two story buildings and drop tests from
3 feet in the air on concrete or steel plates for thousands of cycles
. In addition to all this we use a proprietary U.S. made steel for
the handle with a breaking (tensile) strength in excess of 125,000
psi. These are real numbers substantiated by test certifications
supplied with every load purchased. This material was conceived by
GP Industries in conjunction with a long standing U.S. Steel Mill
to offer High Strength and Ductility without being brittle. To put
this into perspective Welded and Bolted Dumbbells generally use handle
materials in the 55,000-65,000 psi range. Some Import Companies have
made attempts to use stronger imported handle materials but without
accurate and consistent test reports you never know what you are
receiving and this can be very costly and dangerous. At GP Industries
we recognize the challenges associated with welding Dumbbells and
have chosen the Patented Unilock method of assembly. Unilock incorporates
a locking nut with an elliptical (oval) spring steel insert which
upon installation pinches the threads on the handle creating a locking
effect. Under the most severe dropping this nut WILL NOT back off.
What this design accomodates for is a forward adjustment that is
necessary when compression forces from dropping are so severe that
the metal handle actually compresses into the head creating the "HEAD
SPINNING" syndrome found in conventional bolted Dumbbells sometimes
in a very short period of time. The biggest problem is that in those
methods of assembly which have been used for decades, there is no
forward adjustment based on locking adhesives used on the bolts that
require special tools to loosen or tighten as well as other design
obstacles. Keep in mind that under these kinds of forces, conventional
Welded or Bolted Dumbbell handles will easily bend or break due to
there low tensile strength. There is no way to achieve the same handle
strength in a welded dumbbell without costly added steps to the welding
and molding processes dramatically increasing production costs. Additionally
welded dumbbells are prone to breakage due to heat affected zones
from the Welding process. These heat affected zones cannot be seen
with the naked eye so you never know when a handle might simply snap
into two pieces. With this patented design and the patent pending
spline on the handle loosening has been eliminated with a simple
forward adjustment and if ever necessary a component may be changed
easily without special tools. The addition of the spline is truly
revolutionary, upon installation of each head the splines on the
handle actually groove the steel core creating a male female spline
scenario similar to the way a Car Steering wheel is attached making
rotation of the head impossible after installation even if the locking
nut is removed. The entire premise of this creation was to develop
a Dumbbell that would withstand forces that destroy the competition.
There is no stronger more versatile Dumbbell available today at any
price. We challenge the competition to prove otherwise. We are proud
to say that we have used this design for over 8 years and have NEVER
replaced a Dumbbell because of a bent handle.
